Advise

i need some advise, mike and i can't figure out what to do, here is the situation: Luke really wants a lizard for his birthday. he has been talking about it for over a year. i thought he would drop it after a month or so but every day he talks about getting a Lizard for his 6th birthday. if i even talk about not getting one, he starts crying (not throwing a fit to get my way kinda crying but heart-broken crying). I don't want to break his heart. but most lizards live for 15-20 years! i just don't think that between 3 kids and 2 dogs i can handle the care of a lizard, to which Luke responds that he would clean its cage, which i know he is not really capable of yet. So anyway, what i was wondering is what do you think?? do i break the kids heart or give in and get him a lizard??

I would get it for him, but not for a few years until he can really care for it himself. Because...it will be less heartbreaking than if you really can't handle it and have to give it away after you have it.

Yes I agree with Stacie. If YOU don't want the lizard, you shouldn't get it until he is old enough to take responsibility for it. So give him an idea of when you expect he might be ready/old enough for one. Then yeah he'll probably be sad but at least you aren't saying no not ever, and he'll have something to look forward to.
Until then, you can find other ways to satisfy his lizard-love. :) Like take him to see the ones at pet stores from time to time, and watch shows and read books about them. I'll bet you are probably already doing most of those things though huh?

I think lizards are really really gross. I would never want to live with one. That's all the advice I have to offer. Have a nice day.

Tell him he's not old enough to have his very own, special, this is my pet, yet. Tell him as long as he lives in your house, he'll never be old enough. This will serve twofold: 1. He will move out at a proper age 2. You won't have to clean up after another being!

Just kidding... I do agree with the others. You would have to do all sorts of things to have a lizard. You'd have to find a place in your house, get the habitat going, and there's the buying of the crickets, and let me just mention right now, if your lizard is done eating before he's caught all the crickets, you can just expect to go batty listening to the crickets all day and night for the next week!!BAAAATTTTYYYY! (Yes, I know from experience)! I think a better age might be 8 or 9. 8 is a great age because he has hit the age of accountability. 9 is even better because it's one year longer than 8. ;) Hmmm... Yeah, I think 9 might be a good age...(thinking of Ammon here). Good luck with whatever you decide. I'm sure it'll work out no matter what you decide.

BTW- We are excited to see you guys this weekend...are you still planning on coming?

get him the lizard but tell him it has to live with uncle gary until you think he can take care of it himself. then he can visit it and get pictures of it and uncle gary can have a lizard! i think he wants some spotted kind. (then maybe he would not want a lizard yet cause he wouldn't want it to live with us.)
then it could be his choice!
